Coin issued as Notgeld by the Prussian province of Westphalia in 1922, within the emergency coin series created to alleviate the growing shortage of coinage during the economic crisis of the Weimar Republic. The obverse features the portrait of Franz Wilhelm von Fürstenberg, a prominent reformer, educator and statesman linked to the history of Westphalia, depicted in profile with sober and elegant modeling, surrounded by his name in Gothic characters. The reverse shows the prancing horse, Westphalia’s traditional emblem, accompanied by the legend Notgeld, the name of the province, the face value of 100 Mark and the issue date. The specimen retains an attractive original brown color, corresponding to the BN designation, with well-defined relief, uniform surfaces and notable mint luster, characteristics fully in line with the MS63 BN grade awarded by NGC. This issue precedes the million-mark denominations minted during the 1923 hyperinflation and constitutes an important numismatic testament to the progressive economic deterioration experienced by Germany in the early years of the Weimar Republic.
