5 Mark commemorative coin minted by the German Democratic Republic at the Berlin mint (mint mark A), dedicated to the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, famed for its close association with Johann Sebastian Bach, who held the position of cantor there from 1723 to 1750. The obverse shows the church façade with a detailed architectural treatment, accompanied by the inscription THOMAS KIRCHE and LEIPZIG. The reverse bears the national emblem of the German Democratic Republic, surrounded by the state's official designation, the face value, and the issue date.
