Description from the seller
Art Deco Black Glass 'Shagreen' Vase by Michel Herman (HEM) – Silver & Turquoise Enamel, c. 1930
Up for auction is a highly decorative, and exceptionally large Art Deco black glass vase. It was designed and decorated by the French master Michel Herman under his famous signature HEM (Verreries d'Art de HEM), dating back to circa 1930.
Standing at an impressive and rare monumental height of 32.5 cm, this exhibition-sized vase is a magnificent showcase of luxury period craftsmanship. It is made of heavy black hyalith/opaline glass and decorated with bold geometric bands of silver overlay and stylized cloud patterns. The vase is filled with a striking turquoise enamel that masterfully imitates the texture of shagreen (ray skin), a highly prized luxury material in high-end Art Deco interiors.
Authenticity & Marks:
The base features the authentic acid-etched country of origin mark ("Tchecoslovaquie"), proving the high-quality Bohemian glass blank was imported to Paris to be hand-decorated in Herman's atelier.
Specifications:
* Designer: Michel Herman (HEM)
* Period: Circa 1930
* Material: Black glass, silver overlay, turquoise enamel
* Origin: France / Czechoslovakia
Condition:
Good vintage condition. The glass is completely intact with no chips, cracks, or restorations. Please note some expected wear and loss to the silver overlay within the geometric cloud patterns due to age and handling, as shown in the photos. The turquoise enamel remains vibrant and beautifully intact.
A wonderful, authentic addition to any serious Art Deco glass collection.
