Description from the seller

Exceptionally signed first edition on the title page by Fulvio Roiter (1926 – 2016), unique and unattainable in a signed copy on the internet. About 280 pages and 172 black-and-white and color photographs with captions explaining each sequence, texts in French by the writer Jorge Amado, by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, etc. Very handsome orange cloth binding with the title debossed in black on the spine and a illustrated dust jacket. In excellent condition.

In 1957, Fulvio Roiter was invited to Brazil by President Kubitschek, who had learned that the Nadar Prize had been awarded to the photographer in Paris in 1956 and wished him to come and bear witness to the country’s modernization. Roiter made five long stays in Brazil, totaling 9 months, and carried out a colossal body of work to publish this flagship book. Roiter wanted to show everything about Brazil, from the Amazon Indians to the construction of Brasilia, from the Amazon River with floating houses in some places to the “seringueiros” collecting latex from rubber trees, while the “garimperos” dredged the riverbeds in search of gold and diamonds. By the sea, from north to south, salterns span miles of beaches where natural evaporation allows harvesting large quantities of salt, but coffee remains Brazil’s most famous product and helped build immense fortunes, just as sugar did after colonization. Cattle ranching also plays a very important role with its “vaqueiros” or cowboys of the North, West, and South. Brazil is also the land of baroque cities born from European colonization, but the stadiums are at the heart of modern cities and the footballer Pelé is regarded as the nation’s idol. Finally, the city of Rio with its vast landscape is fascinating, and the carnival enlivens it each year while Brasilia, at the time of Roiter’s trip, was under construction. This book thus stands as a major historical testimony to Brazil: indigenous peoples, scenes of traditional life, popular culture, tropical landscapes, vast wild spaces, etc.

Excellent copy, with only minute aging wear to the dust jacket which is nevertheless completely intact (see photo). A book from my personal collection kept in its original state with great care. Shipped protected with reinforced packaging and insured international postal tracking.
