Description from the seller
Pair of large Baroque-style altar candelabra - Bronze - H 106 cm & 104 cm
Description of the work
Up for auction is an imposing and magnificent pair of monumental candelabra (church torches) cast in bronze. The pieces are inspired by the canons of Italian Baroque, with a slender baluster shaft marked by geometric nodes and moldings, resting on a majestic tripod base enriched with curly scroll feet.
This is a fascinating period pairing: the two candelabra share the same structural and decorative design, but show evident differences in proportions, base measurements, finish of the patina, and junction details of the shafts. This uniqueness testifies to ancient artisanal craftsmanship and the collectible nature of the pieces, ideal to create a visually striking focal point in prestigious salons or entrances.
(Note for experts: the vase visible in one of the gallery images is purely illustrative, intended to provide an immediate visual reference to understand the large scale and monumental dimensions of the candelabra).
The upper part ends with wide drip plates shaped with leaf-like pointed edges. As visible in the close-up photos, the summit is prepared with a socket for the central pin (visible on one of the two elements), originally used to fasten the large altar candles.
Analysis of Structural Details (Shaft and Base)
Left candelabrum (H 104 cm / Base 21 cm): Features a more geometric shaft with a polished metal collar at the top and narrower ring nodes. Displays a dark alloy with fascinating traces of natural oxidation (green patina) in the bronze recesses.
Right candelabrum (H 106 cm / Base 28 cm): Has a smoother, more slender shaft and a lower, more voluminous baluster section. Maintains a patination of gold/ancient brass distinctly more uniform and warm.
Technical Sheet
Material: Cast bronze
Style: Baroque / Altar
Era: Late 19th Century / Early 20th Century
Quantity: 2 candelabra (similar pair / era-matched)
Conditions: Good structural condition, stable and robust. They present a beautiful natural patina with the normal signs of time and use that enhance their authenticity.
One of the two plates does not have the protruding threaded pin (please observe carefully the gallery).
Shipping notes
Given the considerable weight of bronze and the monumental height of the pieces, the items will require professional bespoke packaging (high-density foam and reinforced cardboard).
Shipping will be via trackable express courier to ensure maximum safety during transport.
