Mappin and webb - Chamberstick - Silverplated - NO RESERVE

Mappin & Webb silver plated chamberstick, the deep beaded pan fitted with a detachable conical snuffer and a matching extinguisher, engraved with a crest above the motto SPES ANCHORA VITAE.

A chamberstick is the candlestick that was carried to bed. The pan is made wide and dished to catch the wax and to be gripped by the whole hand, and it sits low so the flame is shielded from a draught on the stairs. Both fittings here are present, which is unusual: the tall cone snuffs the candle by cutting the air from it, and the smaller cone caps the wick afterwards.

The pan is bordered with a cast beaded rim and rises to a central beaded socket. The crest engraved on the pan is a stag above a ribboned motto SPES ANCHORA VITAE, which translates as hope is the anchor of life.

The underside is struck with the oval mark MAPPIN & WEBB LONDON & SHEFFIELD and the pattern number W7118. Mappin & Webb held royal warrants and supplied plate from Sheffield and from Regent Street in London.

Condition :
Good antique condition. The plate is bright with light surface scratching, the crest crisp, and both the snuffer and the extinguisher seating correctly on the pan.
