Description from the seller

Ericsson / PTT industrial wall telephone – bakelite – double bell – rotary dial – circa 1950s/60s

A remarkably characterful and sturdily designed Ericsson wall telephone, made for the Dutch PTT and finished in black bakelite. A beautiful piece of Dutch telecommunications history with a distinctly industrial look.

This is clearly not a standard living-room device. The heavy rectangular wall cabinet, the two separate metal bell bowls, the centrally positioned bell hammer, and the classic rotary dial all point to a utilitarian wall instrument intended for professional use. Similar robust Ericsson/PTT wall telephones were used in industrial and commercial environments. A comparable Ericsson wall model with a double bell is also described as a heavily built industrial device for PTT Netherlands.

On the side is the characteristic PTT emblem, a fine authentic detail that underscores the Dutch use of the device.

Ericsson and the Dutch PTT

Ericsson had a Dutch production site in Rijen and, in the post-war period, belonged to the manufacturers that produced telephone devices for the PTT. In addition to Ericsson, companies such as Heemaf and the Dutch Standard Electric Company supplied devices to the Dutch telephone network.

The design of this wall unit clearly comes from the period when bakelite was still extensively used for professional phones. Based on construction, rotary dial, bakelite parts and similar Ericsson/PTT devices, I would cautiously date this specimen to the 1950s-1960s. Without a visible type or date stamp, I would not claim a more specific production year for Catawiki.

Beautiful original Ericsson handset

Particularly striking is the heavy black handset. The Ericsson brand is clearly visible in relief on the handle. The separate speaking and listening sections and its substantial size suit the utilitarian character of the device.

The unit also includes:

* original rotary dial with numbers 0-9
* double external bell
* mechanical bell hammer
* black Ericsson handset
* PTT marking
* wall mounting points
* black bakelite/plastic housing and components
* connections at the bottom
* original telephone cord to the handset

The dial and the two large bells give the front of the device a nearly sculptural appearance. It is precisely this visible technology that today makes this type of phone attractive as both a collector’s item and an interior object.

Condition

The device is in a beautiful, authentic vintage state. There are signs of use and aging, including superficial scratches, discolorations, and wear to the black finish. This patina fits perfectly with the industrial history of the device.

The telephone has not been tested for operation and is therefore offered as a historical collector and decorative object. Connecting to a modern telephone network will generally not be possible without suitable technical adaptation.

An impressive piece for the collector of historical telephony, PTT memorabilia, and Ericsson equipment, but just as attractive as a eye-catcher in an industrial interior, office, shop, café, mancave, film set, or collection of technical antiques.

Dimensions;
Height 27 cm
Width 25 cm
