Ancient Egyptian turquoise faience ring from the New Kingdom (circa 1550–1069 BC) with a thick hoop and flat oval bezel decorated with a wedjat eye, two nfr signs and a sun disc, repaired where the band meets the bezel, diameter 1.6 cm.
Description from the seller
An ancient Egyptian turquoise-coloured faience ring with a thick hoop and a flat oval bezel decorated with hieroglyphs. To the left is a large wedjat eye, followed by two 'nfr' signs. The final sign is a small sun disc. Such symbols would have had apotropaic value and worn for protection. Repair to the ring where the band and bezel meet at each side and at the bottom of the band. Please note that this ring has a small diameter.
Jewellery was highly important throughout all of Ancient Egyptian history, worn across social classes, and by both women and men. Bright colours and patterns were exceedingly popular, as were bold, large pieces. Such rings became popular in the New Kingdom, from the reign of Amenhotep III up until Tutankhamun. They were too fragile to be used as stamp seals so were worn for their protective properties.
Measurements: 1.6cm width
Provenance: Ex 1920s, UK collection.
