Ancient Greek silver drachm of Alexander the Great, circa 322–319 BC, minted at Magnesia ad Maeandrum under Philip III Arrhidaios, with Alexander’s head wearing the Nemean lion skin on the obverse and Zeus enthroned with an eagle and sceptre on the reverse; diameter about 1.7 cm, weight 4 g, condition Good, authenticity Original/official, from a private collection, acquired in 2000, provenance Ex German collection, Munich, 1990s.
Description from the seller
A fine silver drachm of Alexander the Great type, minted under Philip III Arrhidaios, Magnesia ad Maeandrum mint. The obverse displays the profiled head of Alexander wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, facing right. The reverse displays the god, Zeus, enthroned on the left, holding an eagle in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The Greek inscription, although now worn with age, ΑΛΕΞΑΝ∆ΡΟΥ is written vertically to the right of the figure of Zeus. Bee to the left field and spearhead to the outer right. The legend, written in the genitive case, translates as, ALEXANDROY, meaning [the coinage] ‘of Alexander’. Price 1937. Some dark brown deposits to one side.
