Established by Mao Zedong and Zhu De in the remote Jinggang Mountains during the Chinese Civil War, it served as a communist stronghold against the Kuomintang-led Nationalist Government. Although the CCP's Red Army successfully resisted several Nationalist military campaigns, the Jiangxi Soviet was ultimately defeated in 1934, prompting the CCP to begin the Long March to a new base in northwestern China
