Mortar and pestle - Bronze

Mortar with its pestle, in bronze, figurative relief decoration. Interesting ancient bronze mortar, in a golden-toned shade, accompanied by its pestle or handle, equally executed in solid bronze. The mortar has a body roughly cylindrical, slightly flared at the top, resting on a circular molded and raised base. The mouth is marked by a wide, outward-turned lip, rounded in profile, forming a deep vessel originally intended for grinding substances. The most interesting element lies in the exterior decoration of the body, organized in a continuous band of figurative reliefs. Successively appear stylized female heads or busts, presented facing forward, with elaborate headdresses or hairstyles, framed by vertical architectural elements resembling small columns, pilasters or balusters. The composition repeats rhythmically around the mortar, creating a particularly rich and expressive decoration. The faces show stylized features, with almond-shaped eyes, a defined nose and well-defined mouth, framed by pronounced hair or headpieces. The contrast between the golden metal of the raised areas and the dark patination accumulated in the depths of the decoration greatly enhances the relief and gives visual depth to the whole. The base consists of successive circular moldings, providing stability to the piece, while the upper part ends in a wide lip sloping outward. The interior presents a smooth surface and signs of use compatible with the object's original function. The respective pestle, of generous dimensions (28 cm), has a long cylindrical shaft, enriched by framed rings. One end ends in a broad circular surface intended for grinding, while the opposite end features an elegant turned finish, composed of successive spherical and annular elements. The decorative and formal typology recalls the tradition of European bronze mortars of the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly widespread in Southern Europe. It presents an old patina, natural darkening of the metal, small oxidation spots, signs of use, wear and small casting irregularities, especially in the contact zones and interior. These elements are compatible with the object's age and use and contribute to its decorative and historical character. No structural faults. A piece with strong decorative presence, interesting both as a historical utilitarian object and as a collectible item, suitable for classic interiors, curiosities rooms, collections of ancient metals, historical pharmacy or historicist-style decoration.
