Description from the seller
Pair of two large five-armed wall sconces with putti – Louis XV/Rococo style – gilded metal
Beautifully and richly executed pair of large decorative wall sconces/wall appliques in Louis XV/Rococo style.
Each wall sconce features a centrally placed putto, surrounded by exuberantly formed rocaille and acanthus motifs. From the richly adorned central section, five gracefully curved arms spring forth, each ending in a formed candle holder.
Of particular appeal is the asymmetrical, movable form of the arms and leaf motifs. The two putti are executed differently and hold a vertical staff/arm, making the sconces clearly designed as matching pendants/pairs when viewed together.
The sconces consist of several individually cast and mounted metal parts. On the rear you can see the old fixings, screws and mounting construction. The gold finish shows localized wear, discoloration and patina consistent with age and use.
Material: heavy cast metal, gold-colored/gilded finish
Style: Louis XV / Rococo
Dating: probably 19th century / early 20th century
Number of light points: 5 per wall sconce, total 10
Construction: not electrified; intended for candles
Dimensions per item:
Height: approx. 41 cm
Width: approx. 40 cm
Depth: approx. 28 cm
Weight: approx. 3.9 kg
Total weight pair: approx. 7.8 kg
The wall sconces are in a beautiful, authentically used state with signs of age and wear. Locally, the gilding has worn away or darkened. See the detail photos for construction, finish and condition.
A particularly decorative and imposing pair of wall sconces with lovely putti and pronounced Rococo styling. Offered exclusively as a complete pair.
