Set of three antique Dutch koekplanken / speculaasplanken (including a rare double-sided Vrijer & Vrijster (70 cm) with a count mark – 19th century
Object: Lot of 3 antique cookie / speculaas boards (baker’s moulds / folk art)
Provenance: Netherlands
Dating: 19th century (early to mid-19th century)
Material: Hand-carved beechwood (including quarter-sawn beech)
Dimensions:
Board 1 (Double-sided Vrijer/Vrijster): 70 × 17.5 × 3.0 cm
Board 2 (Five-station line board): approx. 60–65 cm long
Board 3 (Three-panel print board): approx. 55–60 cm long
Condition: Very good, authentic state with a beautiful warm, well-worn patina in keeping with age and traditional bakers’ use.
Description:
A particularly beautiful and decorative ensemble of three authentic Dutch cookie and speculaas boards, richly and deeply hand-carved from solid beechwood and other woods. Such boards form the heart of Dutch folk art and bakery history.
1. Monumental double-sided board: 'Vrijer & Vrijster' (70 × 17.5 × 3 cm)
The absolute centerpiece of this lot. A substantial, heavy board with deep relief on both sides:
Side A – The Vrijer: richly detailed with boots on a basement, baggy trousers, braids and foliate motifs and a sobriety of woven garland ornament.
Side B – The Vrijster: Woman figure in traditional clothing with the characteristic bonnet/peaked cap, a cinched jacket and a lush skirt in which a classical decorative vase with floral motifs is incorporated.
Edge: Equipped with an authentic carved count mark / pairing mark (H-shaped notch), used by the baker to recognize sets and pairs directly in the bakery.
2. Five-panel/printex board / line board
A long line board with five classic, very beloved folk-art motifs:
Mounted horseman with hat
Mermaid / sea-nymph with fish tail and exposed upper body
Dutch sailing ship (trident / merchant ship) with full sails
Rooster with extravagant tail (symbol of vigilance and prosperity)
Warrior/soldier in action on horseback
3. Three-panel/printex board
A deeply carved board with three narrative scenes:
A richly filled decorative vase / flower basket (abundance and luck)
Vocational scene: Cooper / innkeeper by a wooden barrel / cask
A strolling engaged couple in 19th-century dress with a walking stick and a watchful little dog at their feet
Condition:
All three boards are in excellent, original collectible condition. No cracks or restorations. The wood shows a deep, warm hue and the characteristic craquelé and signs of use that suit 19th-century bakers’ tools.
