Desk - Rosewood - William IV bureau

Magnificent English William IV library table or writing desk, executed in beautifully figured rosewood. A particularly stylish piece from the period 1830–1837, with a rich yet restrained character.

The top features a striking grain and is finished with a profiled edge in which a floral inserted leaf motif is incorporated. On both sides there is a single drawer on the right; on the left there is always a false drawer, giving the piece a nicely symmetrical appearance all around.

The table stands on an open-work base with elegant curved legs, placed on a slim apron. The claw feet are equipped with integrated casters. Between the legs is a double turned spindle, in the middle adorned with an acanthus leaf motif.

The rosewood top is truly a showpiece – almost too beautiful to cover. A piece of furniture that quietly invites an empty-desk policy.

The table is in very good condition, with hardly any signs of use. There is only a minuscule shrinkage seam in the top. No defects. The original locks are present and complete with keys.

Because the average body height today is somewhat taller than about 180 years ago, the working height may be a bit low for contemporary use. The piece can be adjusted by a few centimeters so that one can comfortably sit with knees under a work surface from the first half of the 19th century in the 21st century as well.
