This devotional medal in an unknown metal, (probably nineteenth-century brass or silvered bronze) depicts Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, better known as the Patroness of Cuba, recognizable by the Virgin with the crowned Child on a boat with three fishermen in prayer among the waves, an iconography linked to the famous milagro of the rescue.
A small statue of the Virgin was found in 1612 or 1628 in Nipe Bay by three salt pickers. Veterans of the Cuban War of Independence asked the Pope to name her the official patroness of the country.
