Description from the seller
Antique Porcelain Pincushion Doll Long Legs Gilt Shoes Boudoir Doll c.1920s/30s
Description
Beautiful and unusual antique porcelain pincushion / boudoir doll, believed to date from approximately the 1920s–1930s.
The doll depicts an elegant lady with a high grey coiffure, delicately hand-painted facial features and period-style costume detailing in yellow, blue and burgundy.
Unlike the more commonly found porcelain half dolls, this example has a wonderful seated construction with two long porcelain legs extending from beneath the skirt, ending in attractive gilt-painted shoes.
The porcelain upper figure measures approximately 6 cm, with the complete pincushion doll measuring approximately 15 cm in total height.
She retains her large padded period textile skirt in an aged champagne/gold colour, decorated with dark ornamental braid and lace trim. Several old pearl-headed pins are also still present in the pincushion.
The underside retains its black-covered circular base. I have carefully checked the piece and have found no visible manufacturer’s mark, so I am selling it as an unmarked Continental European example rather than attributing it to a particular factory.
Condition
The porcelain presents very well for its age, including the delicate projecting legs. There is some age-related wear to the gilt decoration on the shoes.
The textile costume is in very aged antique condition and shows considerable deterioration, including fraying, splits, staining, worn areas and losses to the fabric and trim. I have deliberately left the costume untouched and unrestored, as I believe its aged appearance forms part of the history and character of the piece.
Please study all photographs carefully, particularly those showing the fabric, legs and underside, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A particularly charming and unusual survivor and a lovely addition to a collection of antique half dolls, pincushion dolls, boudoir dolls or early porcelain figurines.
Measurements:
Porcelain upper figure: approx. 6 cm
Overall height: approx. 15 cm
Maker: Unmarked
Origin: Continental European, exact manufacturer unknown
Estimated period: c.1920s–1930s
Material: Glazed porcelain with textile pincushion/dress
