Description from the seller
Corpus Christi – probably Brabantine-school, Mechelen region, late 18th century–early 19th century.
Important wooden Corpus Christi carved statue depicting the crucified Christ, presented without its original cross.
Rround-bosc sculpture of fine quality, characterized by a particularly expressive facial expression, a finely carved beard and hair, a crown of thorns directly carved into the wood, and a loincloth with deep and dynamic folds.
The position of Christ, with the arms raised high, the head tilted, and the naturalistic treatment of the anatomy, is in line with the Baroque religious sculpture tradition of the southern Netherlands.
The reverse shows that the arms were carved separately and then assembled at the shoulders, a traditional technique of the old Corpus figures destined to be fixed on a cross. The reverse is less carefully worked than the front, in keeping with its original purpose.
The wood is very light: the Corpus weighs about 230 g, with no metal elements. The wood species cannot be determined with certainty, but its appearance and lightness are compatible with limewood (linden), a wood widely used in religious sculpture across northern and central Europe.
Stylistically, the work shows characteristics that can be linked to the Brabançonne (Brabant) and Mechlinian tradition, particularly in the treatment of the face, beard and body. The Mechelen region was an important center of religious sculpture in these years. Carefully packed shipments with tracking and insurance.
