AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

France, 19th Century | 100 × 64 cm

An elegant 19th-century French gilt mirror, distinguished by its beautifully aged gilded frame and delicate hand-painted floral and foliate decoration.

The generously moulded frame features softly rounded upper corners and graceful proportions characteristic of French interiors of the period. Its warm gold surface has developed a particularly attractive natural patina, with subtle variations in tone and traces of age that give the piece remarkable depth and authenticity.

A restrained decorative scheme of intertwined leaves and floral motifs runs around the frame, executed in softly contrasting golden and muted tones. Rather than overwhelming the design, the ornamentation complements the architectural simplicity of the frame and gives the mirror a refined, understated presence.

The original-style aged mirror plate displays scattered areas of foxing and natural oxidation, creating the atmospheric surface so sought after in antique mirrors. These imperfections beautifully catch and diffuse the light and form an integral part of the mirror's historic character.

The reverse retains its substantial traditional wooden backing, further illustrating the age and construction of the piece.

Condition

Presented in authentic antique condition, with a beautiful time-worn patina. There are expected traces of age throughout, including wear and small losses to the gilded surface, minor cracking and a more noticeable area of loss along the upper edge of the frame. The mirror plate shows age-related spotting and oxidation.

These details have deliberately been left visible and have not been over-restored, preserving the character and integrity of the piece. Please refer carefully to the detailed photographs.
