Description from the seller
Pair of Chinese Porcelain Glazed Brown “Batavia” and Blue-and-White Porcelain Bowls – Qing Dynasty (19th Century)
Description:
Fascinating pair of Chinese porcelain bowls, dating to the Qing Dynasty, probably the 19th century. The bowls feature the classic external monochrome brown glaze decoration, often defined as “Batavia ware,” which provides an elegant contrast with the interior.
The interior is underglaze blue with a lively pattern of fish (carp) swimming among seaweed and aquatic plants, symbolizing abundance and prosperity in Chinese culture. The outer bottom bears an apocryphal blue four-character mark.
Dimensions:
Diameter: about 12 cm each
Height: about 6 cm each
Conditions:
Please carefully examine the detailed photos to assess the state of preservation.
One bowl shows a fine hairline on the rim (see photos 9 and 10).
Both bowls show signs of wear consistent with age, including small firing defects (such as iron specks and glaze irregularities) and slight chipping or flaking on the rim and foot (see photos 7, 8, 9).
