Thor’s Amulet, a Viking Era bronze miniature axe amulet dating to the 8th–11th century, in very good condition with a profiled socket and decorative punched ornament, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and acquired in 2026 from a UK private collection (previously from Spain).
Description from the seller
Decorated Viking Bronze Amulet – Thor / Perun’s Axe (8th–11th c.)
Description of the Item
A rare, richly decorated early medieval bronze amulet in the shape of a battle axe, dated to the period from the 8th to the 11th century. The surface of the blade is covered with an original, archaic dotted (punched) ornament and precisely stamped geometric lines running along the cutting edge.
The dots arranged in a characteristic pattern and the surrounding lines had magical, lunar, or solar-protective significance in Scandinavian and early medieval symbolism.
The pendant perfectly imitates the construction of full-sized Viking axes – it features a profiled socket (shaft opening) with prominent stabilizing flanges and a hook-shaped projection at the bottom of the beard.
The object is preserved in an excellent archaeological condition, covered with a beautiful, uniform dark-green patina that perfectly highlights the unique details of its blacksmithing and goldsmithing decoration.
Characteristic Features
Type of Object: Miniature votive amulet / decorated pendant in the shape of a Scandinavian-type axe.
Unique Ornament: The blade surface is decorated with a geometric pattern consisting of a series of deeply stamped dots and a vertical stamped line running parallel to the blade.
Blade Architecture: Wide, fan-shaped expansion of the blade, characteristic straight upper line, and a profiled socket facilitating suspension on a leather thong or chain.
State of Preservation: Exceptional cabinet (excavated) condition. The pattern stamped centuries ago remains fully legible and sharp, while the metal is protected by a noble, natural patina with no signs of mechanical cleaning.
History and Period of Origin
Chronology: 8th–11th century AD (Early Middle Ages / Viking Age). The classic period of flourishing artistic craftsmanship and casting among the peoples of Northern Europe.
Symbolism of the Pattern and Dotted Magic: Punched (dotted) decoration on weapons and amulets from that period did not serve solely an aesthetic purpose.
Arrangements of dots were often associated with symbols of stars, drops of rain (brought by the storm god Thor/Perun), or ownership and protective signs that were believed to enhance the power of the talisman.
These pendants constituted a personal sacred object worn by Scandinavian warriors in order to provide themselves with absolute luck and protection in battle.
Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance
Certificate of Authenticity:
The item is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity confirming its authenticity.
Provenance:
The item was acquired in 2026 in the uk private collection from I.S. Previously, it formed part of a private Spanish collection assembled from the 1980s onward.
