Important Pharmacy Olla from Biansato – Montelupo Fiorentino, late 15th / early 16th century
Rare and important pharmacy olla (or pharmacy amphora) in Renaissance majolica, an excellent testimony to the prestigious production of Montelupo Fiorentino between the end of the 1400s (15th century) and the very early years of the 1500s (16th century). The ovoid body, with a slim neck and flared lip, is entirely decorated with a carpet pattern featuring the famous motif “old Persian palmette” painted in intense cobalt blue (zaff era) and manganese brown, alternating with geometric rosettes in yellow-orange on spirals and scroll elements in the background. On the sides stand out the two splendid and majestic twisted-cord handles (torted handles), covered by a thick cobalt blue glaze. The interior of the olla presents the original lead-glazed shiny transparent glaze, necessary at the time for impermeabilization of the container, enriched by a splendid patina and natural centuries-old oxidation (“leopard” pattern) impossible to reproduce artificially. The base is fully biscuit-like rough, hand-finished on the potter’s wheel, with typical signs of wear and aging coherent with the antique period of the piece.
The vessel is structurally solid and visually striking, but bears old restorations with internal plaster fillings, aimed at reinforcing some ancient threads, as documented in the photo.
