Pair of two antique vinaigrette scent boxes in 800 silver, Art Nouveau (Liberty) style from the late 19th to early 20th century, one round with a female profile (Ø3 cm, H1 cm, 22 g) and one rectangular with a grapevine motif (L3 cm, W1.7 cm, H0.8 cm, 16 g), both in good condition with original dark patina.
Description from the seller
Collection lot consisting of two antique vinaigrettes / scent-propelling boxes (dating from the late 19th to early 20th century).
Style: Both pieces belong entirely to the Art Nouveau movement (Liberty style), characterized by soft, sinuous lines and a strong connection with floral, vegetal, and natural motifs typical of the European design’s golden age.
Detailed Description of Each Item
1) Circular Vinaigrette with Female Figure (Liberty Style)
Description: Lid decorated in relief with the profile of a woman with flowing, sinuous hair, a clear and refined homage to Liberty aesthetics (inspired by Alphonse Mucha). Inside, the box is equipped with the original, perfectly intact radiating mesh grid, originally conceived to hold the sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or salts.
Material and Marks: Presumably made of silver. There are two small hallmarks in the inner strike details, but due to time wear and microscopic size the inscriptions are not legible.
Measurements and Weight: Diameter 3 cm, height 1 cm. Total weight 22 g (thick, solid plate).
2) Rectangular Vinaigrette with Vine and Grape Motif
Description: Finely worked raised lid with a grapevine branch, leaves and grape clusters in relief, expression of the period’s decorative naturalism. The interior base features a refined pierced pattern with floral motifs. The hinge opening functions perfectly.
Material and Marks: Made of solid silver with 800 fineness, as evidenced by the clearly impressed “800” stamp inside the lid.
Measurements and Weight: Length 3 cm, depth 1.7 cm, height about 0.8 cm. Total weight 16 g.
General Conditions: Both pieces are in excellent antique condition, enhanced by the magnificent original dark patina preserved in the recesses to emphasize the three-dimensionality of the bas-reliefs.
Visual Note: Some images of the lot have been digitally altered to even out the white background and highlight the details of the objects, which nevertheless remain faithful to the original in every part.
The published photographs remain, in any case, an integral and substantial part of the description of the entire lot.
The objects will be packed with the utmost care and shipped with a tracked service.
