Description from the seller

Very beautiful and ancient Mwana Pwo mask of the Chokwe/Tshokwe of Angola, remarkable for the quality of its expression and the richness of its sculpted details. Idealized representation of the ancestral woman and symbol of feminine beauty, this type of mask occupied a central place during initiation ceremonies and masked dances, where it embodied grace, fertility, and the continuity of the community.

This exemplar immediately captivates with the power of its gaze. The narrow, half-closed eyes, deeply sculpted under heavy eyelids, give the face a meditative and almost hypnotic expression. The ears, particularly meticulous and harmoniously shaped, contribute to the overall balance of the composition while underscoring the elegance of the face. The mouth slightly open, with contours delicately worked, brings a striking presence and an unusual psychological intensity.

The finely engraved scarifications on the cheeks and forehead testify to the chokwe traditional aesthetic ideals and enhance the individualized character of the representation. The original coiffure, preserved, composed of braids in ancient fibers, is a particularly sought-after asset. Rarely preserved with such authenticity, it greatly contributes to the ethnographic quality and the visual presence of the work.

The dark, deep, nuanced patina reveals many years of use and handling. The slight wear observed on the reliefs underscores the piece’s age and further enriches its character. At once expressive, elegant, and loaded with symbolism, this Mwana Pwo mask constitutes a remarkable testament to the refinement of traditional chokwe art and its exceptional capacity to convey emotion, humanity, and spirituality.
