Description from the seller
Rare Kuba ritual maternity cup – Democratic Republic of the Congo. This remarkable sculpture elegantly combines utilitarian function with a deeply symbolic iconography. The vessel rests on a kneeling female figure holding her child against her, an emblematic representation of motherhood, transmission and the continuation of the lineage in Kuba court art.
The face, with almond-shaped eyes, is of remarkable workmanship, enhanced by a finely carved hairstyle and a dark brown patina, deep and silky, bearing witness to a long history of use. Intended to contain precious or ritual substances, this cup perfectly illustrates the refinement of Kuba sculpture, where every detail contributes to the expression of prestige, fertility and the memory of the ancestors.
