Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the mass is faceted (polished). Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests as an intense play of color. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.
Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich liquids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
