Description from the seller
A finely cast and hammered Sasanian bronze bowl featuring a hemispherical shape with a rounded base. The interior is decorated with incised concentric circles to the base and a further encircling band just below the rim. On one side, there is a stylised bird motif formed from hatched lines. The exterior remains unadorned. Patination, earthly encrustations, and signs of wear, such as scratches, to the surface. Minor perforation to the base.
The Sassanians or Sasanians succeeded the Achaemenid Persians, establishing an Empire which, at its peak, expanded from the Euphrates to the Indus Rivers and included modern-day Armenia and Georgia. Sassanian art borrowed from Near Eastern and Greco-Roman traditions, and adapted the significance of these cultures’ iconography to the local repertoire.
Measurements: (circa) W 17.7cm x H 5.5cm
Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
