Nkanu is a people of the DRC, close to the Yaka.
The statue represents a man playing a drum.
This was probably not just a simple decoration: the drum had importance in initiation ceremonies.
These ceremonies were called mukanda.
The drum was notably used to accompany dances and rites, and to cover certain sounds during the ceremonies.
The somewhat “animal” face is mainly a traditional way of stylizing the figure.
We therefore have a Nkanu sculpture depicting a drummer in a ritual context.
