The Mwana Pwo is an iconic traditional mask of the Chokwe people.
It is found mainly in Angola, but also in the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Zambia.
Its name means "young woman" or "beautiful young woman", in reference to the ideal of feminine beauty and to the representation of an ancestor honored by the community.

The Tchokwe are a Bantu-speaking population of Central and Southern Africa, mainly present in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, and to a lesser extent in Zambia. A few thousand also live in Namibia.

This dance and initiation mask is in good condition (see photo). The materials used are wood, natural pigment, and feathers.
