Holidays in Italy! It’s a powerful, joyful, eternal desire reinforced by films, songs and novels.
It is also a color in which the sky and the sea blend together under a sun that comes to warm our happy memories of travels, meetings, lounging or seaside loves.
This is now Claude Nori’s new book, anticipated since Un été Italien, his book long out of print for almost twenty years. You will find his familiar images but also new color photographs accompanied by a narrative in which he relates the especially optimistic atmosphere of the 70s and 80s and also his approach and his photobiographical method, of which he was one of the pioneers.
Claude Nori made his name with photographs of the seafront, the sensuality of beautiful Italian women, his framing to capture adolescent loves and the dynamism of youth, the thirst for happiness in which a tinge of melancholy and creative nostalgia hides.

From 1982, I decided to photograph the Italian seafronts, those where I was happy with my parents but also those that were unknown to me, mythical destinations and cities with evocative names, Capri, Naples, Portofino, San Remo or Stromboli, which had been the subject of songs or which served as settings for films. I had realized that the particular territory of the seashore, the activity on the beach in summer, really constituted a concentrated slice of Italian culture, a ritual through which its art of living was expressed with the greatest force.

Claude Nori

Of Italian origin, Claude Nori, both photographer, writer and publisher, has since 1975 produced several books with autobiographical character whose main themes were Italy, love, adolescent nostalgia and a fascination with neorealist films. His large exhibition at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2012 highlighted the importance of his authorial work through the photography book, which he approaches as a unique space of creation, conducive to an original language between reality and fiction.
