Exquisite Vintage Glass Sculpture – Horse with Seahorse, optical effect and gold inclusions

This exquisite vintage glass sculpture in the shape of a horse captivates with its exceptionally delicate and lightweight construction, fine gold inclusions, and a fascinating optical effect inside the glass.

At the center is an artfully crafted seahorse, whose special internal structure forms the characteristic focal point of the sculpture. Several overlapping, open glass strips are interlocked and, in their structure, resemble the twists of a finely spun rope. Through the different levels of the transparent glass work, the pattern changes with movement and from varying viewing angles and becomes visible. The whitish-appearing structures shift optically against each other and create a subtle shifting effect within the glass.

The fine gold inclusions are particularly elegant, appearing like finely distributed gold dust inside the transparent glass. They provide warm accents and are found both in the upper area and on the lower base ring.

The top finish is characterized by eight individual, geometrically arranged glass portions. Together with the gold-decorated lower base ring, this creates a balanced combination of geometric form, transparent glass work, and decorative details.

Noteworthy is the exceptionally thin and light execution of the glass. The low material thickness and the finely worked inner structures indicate high-quality and technically sophisticated glass processing. It is precisely this combination of lightness, delicate internal structure, and embedded gold elements that gives the object its special quality.

Classification in Murano glass art

The piece displays several features that make a connection to traditional Venetian or Murano glass processing particularly interesting: the very fine wall thickness, the low weight, the complex inner glass structure, the decorative gold inclusions, and the elaborate connection of different glass layers within the object.

Murano developed over centuries into an important center of European glass art. A decisive historical date is 1291, when the Venetian government relocated the glass furnaces from Venice to the island of Murano. There, numerous demanding techniques for delicate, multi-layered and decoratively refined glass works were developed and refined.

The present piece, in its design and craftsmanship, is very close to this Murano tradition or Murano style.

A direct Murano signature or maker’s mark is not present on the object. The original provenance cannot therefore be conclusively documented. The classification as Murano or Murano-style glass work is based on the recognizable features and the well-known connection to other Murano objects; corresponding original labels or invoice documents exist for other pieces from this context, but not for this specific object.
