Description from the seller
Antique Transylvanian Saxon Folk Costume Coat, Brașov Region, Dated 1862
A remarkable antique traditional coat from the Transylvanian Saxon (Siebenbürger Sachsen) folk costume tradition of the Brașov (Kronstadt) region, Romania, hand-sewn from thick woven wool/hemp cloth, hand-embroidered, and inscribed with the date 1862 on the back panel, flanked by embroidered leaf motifs and initials.
The front lapels feature finely hand-embroidered floral motifs — stylized flower vases/bouquets — in wool thread (black, ochre, blue, green), bordered with red piping. The shoulders show triangular red-and-blue panels with a woven cord/braid tie at the collar. The back yoke carries the embroidered date "1862" with decorative leaf sprigs and initials, in the traditional style of Transylvanian Saxon ceremonial dress.
This coat was traditionally worn by the Transylvanian Saxon community (Siebenbürger Sachsen) around Brașov (Kronstadt) for festive or ceremonial occasions — a rare surviving example of this distinct Central European folk heritage, over 160 years old.
