Spain – 2,000 Pesetas 1998 – Philip II and El Escorial
Spanish commemorative coin of 2,000 pesetas, minted in 1998 during the reign of Juan Carlos I by the Real Casa de la Moneda in Madrid.
The coin was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Philip II (1598–1998).
Obverse: portrait of Juan Carlos I looking to the left, accompanied by the legend “JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA” and the year of issue “1998”.
Reverse: depiction of Philip II beside the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with the legend “FELIPE II 1598–1998”, the mint mark “M” and the face value of “2000 PTAS”. The piece also incorporates the latent image feature of the issue.
