Thailand, 14th – 16th century
10 cm height x 30 cm diameter
This piece is a remarkable testimony to Sawankhalok pottery, produced during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Heavily influenced by Chinese Longquan celadons, Thai potters developed a distinctive style. These large lobed plates were prestigious, highly sought-after items, widely exported throughout maritime Southeast Asia, notably to Indonesia and the Philippines.
Important circular hollow plate in stoneware with a polylobed rim in a flower-like shape, featuring a finely incised decoration beneath a translucent celadon glaze, crackled, in a delicate olive green-olive gray hue. The basin is centered by a recessed medallion marked by two concentric circles. The edge is adorned with an elegant register of incised wavy motifs simulating waves or stylized aquatic scrolls, framed by circular asterisms. The exterior wall is rhythmically carved with vertical radiating channels evoking stylized lotus petals. The rim extends into a flared lip, subtly cut into regular lobes imitating the corolla of a blooming flower.
