Ancient Orthodox icon – Christ Pantocrator – painted wood – 19th, partially restored
Old Orthodox icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, painted on a wooden panel.
Christ is depicted facing forward, his right hand raised in a sign of blessing and in his left hand holding an open Gospel with inscriptions in Church Slavonic characters.
The icon shows a beautiful antique patina, natural craquelure of the paint layer, as well as signs of wear and some material losses related to age, notably at the level of the face and the halo.
The reverse shows an old wooden construction with tool marks, wear and patina consistent with the age of the object.
Probable attribution: Russia or Slavic Orthodox area
Dating estimate: late 19th century – early 20th century
Technique: probably tempera on wooden panel
Inscriptions: Church Slavonic
Dimensions: 22 × 18.5 × 2.5 cm
Weight: about 660 g
Condition: aged used condition, with craquelure, wear, small losses of paint and traces of time visible in the photos. No recent restoration known.
