Pharmacy Jar in Polychrome Majolica from Cerreto Sannita – Mid-19th Century

Fascinating pharmacy jar with a lid in polychrome majolica from Cerreto Sannita, datable to the mid-19th century, expression of the long and prestigious ceramic tradition of Cerreto Sannita.

The piece features the characteristic pear shape, with a generously flared body that tapers toward the foot, a shaped mouth and a lid surmounted by an apex handle.

Of particular charm is the rich hand-painted polychrome decoration, developed across the entire surface with large floral and botanical motifs, leaves and small winged insects. The palette, lively and immediately decorative, alternates blue, ramina green, yellow and manganese on the light background of the majolica.

The painting preserves that pleasant freedom of gesture and those irregularities inherent to artisanal execution, which make every aspect of the vase different and contribute to its strong character.

On the body also appears the date “1742” painted in blue, an evident reference to the oldest seventeenth- and eighteenth-century models of Cerreto Sannita production, whose repertoire continued to be reproduced and reinterpreted in the course of the nineteenth century.

A piece of great presence, in which the vivacity of the decoration meets a form historically tied to pharmacy jars and the great tradition of majolica in southern Italy.
