Wall mirror - Gilt bronze

Grande wall mirror in golden bronze with a feminine mascaron and lattice decoration, in the Louis XV/Rococo Revival style, probably Spain, mid-20th century, c. 1940–1960. A monumental wall mirror of large dimensions, featuring an elaborately molded frame entirely executed in golden bronze, inspired by Louis XV and marked Rococo Revival language.

The composition unfolds according to an exuberant design of curves and counter-curves, combining volutes, vegetal scrolls, acanthus leaves, floral elements, shelling and openwork lattice areas, in a revivalist interpretation of the 18th-century French decorative vocabulary.

The upper part is particularly expressive, crowned by a large feminine mascaron in high relief, framed by a shell or radiating fan. The carefully modeled face constitutes the main sculptural element of the composition and is flanked by volutes, small floral motifs and broad areas of trellis or openwork lattice, which confer light visual air to a bronze structure of substantial presence.

Below the mascaron develop two large arched movements that follow the upper contour of the mirrored panel. From this area delicate garlands of flowers and foliage in bronze extend, suspended above the mirror itself, increasing the three-dimensional effect of the decoration. The sides feature successive C- and S-shaped scrolls, stylized flowers, foliage, and new perforated lattice reserves, forming a dynamic and deeply cut silhouette.

Although the language of Rococo is deliberately dynamic, the overall composition maintains a carefully balanced bilateral organization, a characteristic of many historicist interpretations of the style produced in the 20th century. In the lower section, the decoration becomes denser again, with a sequence of acanthus leaves and volutes converging toward a large central fan or palm leaf, conceived as a visual counterpoint to the mascaron crowning the mirror.

The mirrored panel itself also features its own decoration, presenting several stylized vegetal motifs engraved or frosted on the glass, consisting of fine curved stems, small leaves, and circular elements resembling berries or pearls. This peripheral decoration discreetly accompanies the frame design without interfering with the large central reflective surface.

Bronze presents a warm golden tone, with slight variations and patina in the deeper relief areas, a circumstance that enhances the reading of volumes and highlights the sculptural richness of the casting. The back preserves a cut protective panel following the contour of the mirrored panel and a metal suspension system located near the upper edge.

Stylistic framing - The piece belongs to the movement of recovery of French historical styles that remained particularly popular in European decoration during the first half and mid-20th century. The design directly reclaims elements associated with French Rococo under Louis XV, namely rocaille, shells, asymmetric curves, naturalistic vegetal elements, mascarons, and the taste for alternation between densely ornamented zones and voided elements.

In good condition. The bronze retains the gilded finish well, showing slight tonal variations and signs compatible with use and age. The mirrored panel is complete and retains its engraved/frosted decorative motifs.
