An exceptional and rarely offered piece of Dutch craftsmanship: an original casting mold for decorative components of Zaan clocks. This artisanal mold consists of a wooden carrier with tin mold parts and was used in traditional sand casting. The mold was pressed into fine molding sand, after which the resulting hollows were filled with molten metal, such as bronze, brass, or tin. After cooling, detailed ornaments were formed that were finished and mounted on a Zaan clock.

This mold brings together multiple parts. The central oval ornament displays a classical scene with a female figure, surrounded by musical instruments, laurel crowns, and ornate decorations. Such medallions were used as richly decorated front ornaments on luxury Zaan clocks. At the top there are also two elegant floral decorative pieces that served as ornamental fittings for the clock case.

The Zaan clock is among the most characteristic Dutch clock types and is known for its richly cast ornaments. The production of these parts required a great deal of experience and extremely precise casting molds. Because such molds were used intensively for many years in foundries and workshops, original examples are nowadays exceptionally scarce and almost never on the market.

This casting mold is not only a remarkable piece of historical tooling but also an impressive decorative object that reflects the history of Dutch clockmakers and foundry traditions. A unique addition for collectors of antique tools, Zaan clocks, industrial heritage, and artisanal objects.

Condition

The mold is in used, authentic condition with normal signs of wear and aging consistent with years of professional use. Slight wear is visible on some protruding parts.
