Set of two antique red-copper buckets (akers) with handmade dovetail joints – 18th / early 19th century
Description:
Beautiful, decorative set of two authentic red-copper buckets (also known as akers or nagelemmers) in two successive sizes.
Both buckets are in a lovely antique condition and are equipped with sturdy, movable copper handles.
The absolute highlight and also the ultimate proof of craftsmanship is the handmade dovetail joint (tilt seam) on the side.
This notched seam is artisanally soldered closed with yellow copper (brass) to render the vessels watertight at the time.
The seam displays a splendid, authentic green copper patina (verdigris), bearing witness to the great age.
Handmade rivets: The two round heads of the rivets holding the handle are not perfectly symmetrical. This points to artisanal hammer work.
Solder traces at the handle eye: Under the left eye of the handle eye there is also a small trace of the yellow brass/yellow copper. They were often soldered extra for added strength so the bucket could carry the weight of water.
Bent bottom rim: The bottom is bent around the side wall and hand-peened, a technique typical of early forges.
