Description from the seller

A highly regarded photographic monograph by celebrated photographer Fan Ho, presenting his poetic vision of mid-20th-century Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Yesterday brings together Fan Ho’s distinctive black-and-white photographs of Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s. His images are especially admired for their dramatic use of light, shadow, geometry and human figures, transforming everyday street scenes into carefully balanced and atmospheric compositions.

The photographs portray a Hong Kong that has largely disappeared: narrow streets, harbour life, workers, pedestrians and quiet moments of daily life captured during a period of rapid social and urban change.

One of the photographs visible in this copy is Fan Ho’s celebrated “Approaching Shadow”, an image renowned for its powerful geometric composition and contrast between a solitary figure, architecture and light.
