Burner - plate iron - Antique hand coffee roaster

A special and authentic piece of European coffee history: this antique hand coffee roaster probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, a period when coffee was still roasted entirely by hand at home. Before electric coffee roasters and modern kitchen appliances existed, green coffee beans were roasted in a metal roaster like this above a heat source. The hand crank continuously moved the internal agitator, so the beans were turned evenly during roasting and would not burn. The semicircular flap allowed the beans to be put into the roaster and removed after roasting. In that sense, this device is effectively a precursor to the modern coffee roaster.

The coffee roaster is made of heavy sheet iron, with wrought iron parts, and has a beautiful dark patina developed through age and use.
