Description from the seller

A special and authentic piece of European coffee history: this antique hand coffee roaster probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, a period when coffee was still roasted entirely by hand at home. Before electric coffee roasters and modern kitchen appliances existed, green coffee beans were roasted in a metal roaster like this above a heat source. The hand crank continuously moved the internal agitator, so the beans were turned evenly during roasting and would not burn. The semicircular flap allowed the beans to be put into the roaster and removed after roasting. In that sense, this device is effectively a precursor to the modern coffee roaster.

Who buys this object not only gets a decorative antique household item, but also a tangible piece of the history of our daily cup of coffee. It shows how much manual labor used to be required to prepare coffee, long before modern machines took over this process.

The coffee roaster is made of heavy sheet iron, with wrought iron parts, and has a beautiful dark patina developed through age and use. The manual mechanism, the crank, the original flap and the internal stirring blade are still present. It is precisely the visible signs of wear and oxidation that reinforce the authentic character and age.

A atmospheric object for lovers of genuine antiques, brocante, historic kitchen items and coffee memorabilia, but also particularly decorative in a rural, classical or eclectic interior.
