It is fossilized wood dating back about 200 million years; all parts from a log or branches have been silicified, meaning that organic components were gradually replaced by silicon in the form of jasper, chalcedony and more rarely opal. Without the organic parts, all living matter was replaced by stone: there are growth rings, cell separations, almost like worm cracks. Its features are those of the mineral that would have transformed the wood: silicon. And that’s what we call petrified wood in common language.
