Josef Franz Maria Hoffmann (Pirnitz, December 15, 1870 – Vienna, May 7, 1956) was an Austrian architect and designer, involved in the founding of the Vienna Secession and the central figure of the Wiener Werkstätte, which he founded in 1903. Among his best-known designs is the Stoclet Palace in Brussels, the culmination of Jugendstil. Characteristic is his preference for squares and cubes (for Cubism), which earned him the nickname Quadrat-Hoffmann. His style gradually became simpler and more abstract, and his work over time was limited to functional, domestic attributes.
