Green tourmalines are also referred to as verdelite. This designation, however, says nothing about the mineralogical assignment to a specific type of tourmaline. The name verdelite simply describes the color of the tourmaline.
The mineral group of tourmalines comprises a series of boron-containing, similar ring silicates with a complex structure. Today, twelve varieties of tourmaline are distinguished, most of which occur as solid solutions.
In the past, the name 'tourmaline' was a catch-all term for unknown, usually red gemstones and was in the 18th century in Europe derived from its Sinhala origin, meaning 'something small from the earth' (toramolli).
Today tourmalines are often described as the 'gems of the rainbow' because of their many colors.
