Description from the seller
Great ancient Indo-Islamic Aftaba – North India – 19th century – Brass – 36 cm / 1.94 kg
Exceptional and imposing Indo-Islamic Aftaba (water vessel) crafted from solid brass/copper alloy, presumably North India, 19th century.
The 36 cm tall vessel, weighing about 1.94 kg, follows the Mogul historical style in its design and is distinguished by an especially elaborate zoomorphic and floral decoration.
The flattened, pear-shaped body rests on a broad foot and on both sides is adorned with richly engraved arabesques, palmettes, and stylized plant motifs. The ornamentation continues on the tall neck and at the base.
Particularly characteristic is the extraordinarily long, curved spout, ending in a sculpturally worked zoomorphic head. On the opposite side there is a large curved snake- or dragon-handle with a worked scale texture. These animal motifs echo design elements from older Indo-Islamic and Mughal metal works.
The tall neck is capped by a movable hinge lid with a central knob. The lid also bears engraved geometric-floral decoration.
The vessel bears a pronounced patina that has formed over a long period. Especially inside, a very dark age patina is evident. Manufacturing and working traces as well as irregularities of the engravings emphasize the handcrafted character of the piece.
Measurements and weight:
* Height: approx. 36 cm
* Weight: approx. 1,940 g
* Material: brass / copper alloy
* Origin: presumably North India
* Dating: 19th century
* Style: Indo-Islamic / Mughal Revival
Condition:
Age-appropriate, authentic condition with noticeable patina, oxidation traces, wear, scratches, and further signs of use. The surfaces were intentionally not polished to high gloss so that the existing patina remains.
The lid is present and movable. On the handle or its construction there are age-related signs of use and damage. Please refer to the numerous detail photos regarding this and the overall condition.
A decorative and, due to its size, weight, and the combination of a zoomorphic spout, snake/dragon handle, and rich engraving, an exceptionally interesting example of Indo-Islamic metal art.
