Description from the seller
Antique English Balloon-Bracket Clock – John Bittleston, London – ca. 1770–1795
For sale is an exceptionally high-quality English Balloon-Bracket clock from the late George III era, manufactured in London and signed “Bittleston London” on the richly engraved back plate of the movement.
This rare form of the so-called Balloon Clock ranks among the most elegant and sought-after bracket clocks of the 18th century, captivating with its harmonious proportions, fine craftsmanship, and technically sophisticated features.
Description
The black ebonized wooden case is classically balloon-shaped and decorated with gilded bronze and brass applications. Notable highlights include:
the gilded pineapple/pinecone finial
the side carrying handles
the finely worked gilded feet
the decorative front applique in the sun motif
The glazed front door is hinged on the side and allows a view of the generous, light dial.
Dial & Functions
The large white dial (Ø about 22 cm) is typically English in design with:
Roman hour numerals
Arabic minute track
Central hour and minute hands
Date display (1–31) in the lower auxiliary dial
Strike/Silent indicator in the upper auxiliary dial to activate/deactivate the striking mechanism
The clock features a striking mechanism (Strike), which can be conveniently turned on and off via the Strike/Silent function – a highly valued feature in high-quality bracket clocks.
Movement & Signature
Inside runs a finely engraved English bracket clock movement, signed:
“Bittleston / London”
John Bittleston was a documented London clockmaker, active ca. 1765–1794, among others in High Holborn. The signature is a clear authenticity mark and confirms the London provenance of this clock.
Dimensions
Height: approx. 58 cm
Width: approx. 32 cm
Depth: approx. 17 cm
Dial: approx. 22 cm diameter
Classification & Collectors’ Value
Balloon-bracket clocks of this quality, size, and with calendar as well as strike/silent function are rare. Comparable clocks are known, among others, from John Leroux, but this specimen is clearly Bittleston-signed and thus stands on its own in value.
A high-quality, museum-grade piece of English clockmaking from the late 18th century.
