Description from the seller

English mantel clock “Connell – 3 Cheapside, London” | Chain & Fusee

Dimensions: 39 cm height × 33 cm width × 17.5 cm depth
Signature on the dial: Connell, 3 Cheapside, London – additionally numbered on the bottom “630” (visible in the photos).
Winding: original English winding key included.

Description & Particulars
Case: solid wood (light, vividly grained tone; profiled on the sides), surround with deeply cut floral carvings in a darker contrasting stain. Front with decorative “wavy” (fluted) sight edge around the dial; front door with bevelled glass, rear service door with red textile lining.

Dial: finely silvered brass dial with delicate, hand-engraved arabesque ornamentation; Roman numerals and minute markers; finely blued “moon”/spade hands in the English style.

Movement: classic English chain-and-fusee movement with pendulum – clearly visible in the interior photos: fusee wheel, robust chain, and oscillation via a round, polished brass lenticular pendulum.

Running time / Function: single-train timepiece, without strike (only a winding square on the dial). Typically 8-day movement for this design.

Condition: very nice, well-preserved original condition with appropriate patina; case clean, carvings intact, silvered dial with small authentic time traces; movement clean and complete. (As with antique clocks, if not already done, a professional servicing is recommended for optimal timekeeping.)

Dating & Classification
The signature Connell, Cheapside (London) points to the well-known London clockmaker and dealer William / W.G. Connell, who operated in Cheapside from the mid-19th century (documented from about 1845; later addresses vary between 83/86 Cheapside). This allows dating the clock securely to circa 1850–1860.

Technical Highlights (Why this specimen is special)
Classic English precision system (Fusee): constant force via chain-and-fusee, thus steadier running – a mark of quality among better London clocks of the 19th century.

Elaborate carving: decorative Rocaille/leaf motifs around the dial – clearly above the standard of plain cases.

Silvered, engraved dial – higher quality than painted/printed dials, with finely executed ornament.

Original key & numbered dial (“630”) – fine indicators of originality.

Compact mantel clock size (39 × 33 × 17.5 cm) – imposing, yet suitable for the display cabinet.

What’s Included
Mantel clock Connell, 3 Cheapside, London, No. “630”
Original English winding key
Pendulum

Service & Shipping Note
The clock is complete and presented in very good condition. As with antique fusee movements, we recommend a fresh inspection/oiling by a clockmaker for daily operation. Safe shipping (carefully packed, pendulum shipped separately) or collection by arrangement.
