Snuff box - Horn, Metal - Scottish Ram’s Horn Snuff

Extraordinary ancient Scottish snuff box made from naturally grown ram horn, a so-called "Snuff Mull," presumably from the 19th century.

The piece features the characteristic, heavily curved natural horn form typical of traditional Scottish snuff mulls. Especially decorative is the large, opening round lid with a finely textured surface, central historic cartouche, and a visually ornate edge.

The horn body shows a very beautiful, decades-long developed dark patina. The combination of natural ram horn and the intricately worked metal mounts makes the object an interesting piece of Scottish cultural and everyday history.

Such vessels were used for the storage and presentation of snuff and were particularly common in Scotland. Because natural horn was used, each specimen is unique.

A manufacturer or master mark could not be clearly identified. The metal has not been professionally tested either. Given the appearance, silver or a silver alloy, or silver-plated/other white metal are possible. A designation as silver is therefore expressly not guaranteed.

The exact dating is also not evidenced by a mark or documentation. Based on construction, design, and comparison pieces, a dating to Scotland, 19th century, probably mid to late 19th century, seems plausible.

Condition

Authentic, clearly age-related used condition.

The horn shows age-related cracks or stress fractures, surface traces, scratches and natural irregularities. The metal parts show patina, oxidation, wear, scratches and further age- and usage-related traces. Also inside there are age- or wear-related traces.

The lid opens, as shown in the photographs.

The object has not been restored or polished to a high gloss for sale. The existing patina has been deliberately left intact.
