Glenn Brown has created an artistic language that transcends time and painting conventions. His mannerist impulses arise from the desire to breathe new life into the extremities of historical form. Through reference, appropriation, and inquiry, he presents a contemporary reading of images that are embedded in memory. The figures and landscapes borrowed from the universe of art history gradually transform into exuberant entities. In sophisticated compositions, different stories fuse: Renaissance, Impressionism, Surrealism. Brown creates a space where the abstract and the visceral, the rational and the irrational, the beautiful and the grotesque, blend in a vertiginous amalgam.

The volume is the catalogue of the exhibition held at the Bardini Museum in Florence from 10 June to 23 October 2017. The exhibition presents, alongside the renowned collection of the great art dealer and collector of the 19th and 20th centuries, Stefano Bardini, over thirty works by Glenn Brown, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures – some of which are presented for the first time and specifically created for the exhibition. The book offers important documentation and is a testament to this extraordinary cultural event that confirms the city of Florence’s attention to promoting contemporary art.
