Large Asafo flag textile (Frankaa) from the Fante people in Ghana, dating to the second half of the 20th century, made of cotton with multicoloured fabric appliqués and cotton threads, measuring 159 by 115 cm, in good condition with minor age-related wear.

Description:
Imposing textile of African tribal art in fabric appliqué, authentic creation of the Fante people (Ghana, West Africa).
This large-format piece illustrates the Asafo narrative art. On a black cotton ground, a lush composition of appliqué motifs in polychrome fabrics (yellow, red, blue, green) accented by hand-drawn embroidery (visible stitches on the front from the reverse) features a bestiary and figurative characters: teeth-armed fish, birds, felines, bulls/buffaloes, as well as complex human scenes (captive chained, armed figures, gathering).
Asafo pieces of this size and with such rich figurative detail make superb decorative textiles and favorable pieces for African popular art collections.
