Pair of 18th‑century Baroque Solomonic wooden columns, carved, gilt and polychromed, of Spanish origin, dimensions 100 × 18 × 18 cm, weight 20 kg, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
Pair of sculptures, “Solomonic columns”, carved wood, gilded and polychromed, 18th c – Spain
Material: Carved wood, gilded and polychromed
Period: 18th century
Country of origin: Spain
Good condition in line with age and use
Dimensions: 100 x 18 x 18 cm.
Magnificent pair of solomonic columns belonging to the decorative framework of a Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century. These pieces, originally, would be attached to the altarpiece structure; therefore their ornamentation is concentrated on the visible face; on the back face the wood is carved but bare, without gold and barely polychromed.
The solomonic columns twist on their own axis with a serpentine shape. The entire surface is decorated with gilded vegetal motifs on a red background and the helicoidal scrolling in a deep green. They culminate in an intricate Corinthian capital, rich with delicate acanthus leaves that curve outward. The quality of the gilding technique with gold leaf stands out.
Solomonic columns are a type of architectural column characterized by their spiral form, similar to a screw, and decorated with vegetal motifs. This architectural style originated in 16th-century Italy and became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and Latin America.
